Psychology students usually pick a topic they care about. That part is easy.

The hard part comes later. You need 200 participants for your SEM, and you have six weeks. In my 12 years of helping psychology students, recruitment has sunk more dissertations than bad ideas ever did.

This list provides potential questions alongside study designs, statistical tests and real secondary-data sources. Each also links to a related university thesis whose methodology you can examine.

How to use this list

  1. Choose two or three questions from the psychology area that interests you most.
  2. Inspect the source dataset and codebook for validated measurements of your key constructs.
  3. Study the linked thesis to understand operationalisation and research methods.
  4. Decide whether mediation, moderation or a simpler model fits your question.
  5. Discuss the shortlist with your supervisor or arrange a free consultation.

How to turn one of these into your own topic

  1. Narrow it. Select an age group, country and main outcome.

  3. Choose your model. Learn how to select your statistical analysis before data collection.
  4. Check power. Assess sample size and common power-analysis mistakes.
  5. Check originality. Search PsycINFO and Google Scholar for related published research.

For questionnaires, review questionnaire design mistakes and the differences between exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.

Popular questions

How many participants do I need for a psychology dissertation?

Run a power analysis first. A simple regression often needs 80 to 150 people. SEM usually needs 200 or more.

Can I use an existing questionnaire or scale?

Yes. Use a validated scale and cite the original authors. Report Cronbach’s alpha for your own sample.

Mediation or moderation, which fits my research question?

Use mediation when X affects Y through a third variable. Use moderation when the X to Y link changes across groups or levels.

Can I use secondary data for a psychology dissertation?

Yes. Open Psychometrics, OSF, MIDUS and Understanding Society all offer free data. Many supervisors accept secondary data for Masters work.

Should I use SPSS, R or JASP for psychology?

SPSS with PROCESS is most common for mediation. R and JASP are free and handle SEM well. Use what your department supports.

Is there a psychology research topics PDF?

Yes. Download the full Topic and Method list from this page. It includes every topic, test and dataset link.
