Sports science students usually plan a lab study. Then the lab is booked, the athletes are injured and the season is over.

In my 12 years of helping sports science students, small samples and lost data points have caused more stress than any test. A study with 12 people can still pass. It just needs the right design and the right test.

This collection offers options using exercise, fitness, wearable and sports performance data. Every question has a recommended method and an example thesis to review.

How to use this list

  1. Choose two or three questions from an area you train, coach or study.
  2. Review the dataset and its codebook to confirm the required measurements exist.
  3. Read the linked thesis and examine its approach to small or incomplete samples.
  4. Decide whether your question requires repeated measurements from the same participants.
  5. Take your shortlist to your supervisor or discuss it in a free meeting.

Exercise physiology

Physiology topics compare how the body responds to different types of exercise. Wearable and gym datasets give you heart rate and energy data without a lab.

TOPIC 05

Do fitter adults have lower resting heart rate and blood pressure?

Study design
Cross-sectional
Statistical method
Survey-weighted linear regression

Strength and conditioning

OpenPowerlifting holds results from thousands of meets. It is the largest free strength dataset you will find.

Research area 03 / 10

Sports nutrition and body composition

Body composition topics link diet, size and strength. NHANES adds lab-grade measures like grip strength and DEXA.

Research area 04 / 10

Sport and exercise psychology

Psychology topics ask why people move, and what moving does for the mind. Active Lives includes wellbeing and motivation questions.

Research area 05 / 10

Biomechanics, injury and recovery

Injury and movement topics need sensor or health survey data. Accelerometer files and NHANES pain questions are a good place to start.

How to turn one of these into your own topic

  1. Narrow it. Pick one sport, age group and outcome.
  2. Check your data. Assess missing measurements in gym and wearable datasets before finalising the topic.
  3. Match your test to the design. See paired t-test versus repeated measures ANOVA for repeated observations.
  4. Report effect sizes. Present confidence intervals, especially in small samples, and review sample size mistakes.
  5. Check originality. Search SPORTDiscus and Google Scholar for comparable studies.

Popular questions

Is a sample of 12 enough for a sports science study?

It can be for repeated measures designs. Each person acts as their own control. Report effect sizes and confidence intervals, not only p values.

Can I test my own team or club?

Yes, with ethics approval and informed consent from every athlete. Avoid pressure on players to take part.

Which test fits a pre and post training study?

Use a paired t-test for two time points. Use repeated measures ANOVA or a mixed model for three or more.

Can I use wearable or tracker data?

Yes. Fitbit, PhysioNet and NHANES accelerometer data are free. Check how each device measured activity before you compare groups.

Is sports science quantitative or qualitative?

Most sports science dissertations are quantitative. Sports psychology and coaching topics often use qualitative or mixed methods.

Is there a sports science research topics PDF?

Yes. Download the full Topic and Method list from this page. It includes every topic, test and dataset link.

Perfect for students, researchers, and professionals looking to build real statistical skills.
